Structure

As façade or roof element, the insulating glass is always made of three panes. In other words: it is composed of high-quality double-pane insulating glass with a design panel made of metal interlayer and exterior glass surface. This design panel is put before the double glass pane. The detailed structure from the outside to the inside is as follows:Exterior pane, hardened glass, inter-pane cavity with metal interlayer (thickness: 2- 8 mm, depending on the interlayer material), mid pane made of hardened glass with solar or thermal protection layer, inter-pane cavity (thickness: 8-12 mm) filled with air or gas, inner pane (depending on individual requirements, hardening of the glass is not necessary). Double structures without physical construction requirements, such as dividing wall systems, can be built with any type of metal interlayer.

Dimensions and installations

OKATECH is glazed like a normal insulating glass. The maximum width of expanded metal grids is 1250 mm or 1500 mm, metal weaves are available in width up to 5m and the width of metal sheets with perforations (“holes”) depends on the material. We recommend a maximum pane size of 7 m². Other sizes should be discussed with us in the early stages of the planning process.Physical data The Ug-value in the standardised construction is 1.0 – 1.2 – 1.5 W/(m²K) | 0.18 – 0.21 – 0.26 Btu/(hr ft² °F) depending on the filling gas and the selected coating. Light transmission and  depend upon the type of coating and the metal interlayer. The product documentation for OKATECH contains a summarised table showing the possible combinations of standard weaves with solar or thermal protection layers.

The innovative power of OKALUX has much to offer for the design oriented architect: a design element in the area of multi-pane glazing called OKATECH.OKATECH is an insulating glass with metal interlayer. Various textures such as metal interlays, expanded metal grids or ornaments with perforations (“holes”) with different colour coverings become combined with sun protecting or heat loss covering and thus add glow, structure and texture to the insulating glass. Emphasis is given to the interplay of visual attractions, light and shadow, glow and structure, light diffusion and reflection. Tightly woven patterns in façade glazings can almost “exclude” glare caused during the zenith of the summer sun.

The result of the dispersal of artificial or natural light through the material patterns are constantly new and fascinating reflections. These shadow patterns reduce the direct solar transmission. The total degree of energy transmission is basically determined by the absorption of the incorporated metal wires and can be lower than 30%. Interesting for the eye: if the weave is applied in different densities, it highlights the lightness and elegance of architecture and deliberately creates contrasting light effects.Functionality meets optical attractiveness: the effective and transparent sun protection is combined with an aesthetic sight protection. The manifold possible combinations allow a precise, object specific adjustment of light transmission and g-values with variable transparency.  Products Expanded metal grids can be variably applied as natural aluminium, powder coated, anodised, patinated or colour-printed. The metal weaves are made of stretched wires in different wire- and rope thickness. They are available in both in bronze or in elegant stainless steel. Standard weave types are: Louvre, Sambesi, Omega, Kiwi, Mandarin. Other weave types on request.

Extraordinary architectural concepts can be realized with OKATECHVISION. As the exclusive partner of the Swiss manufacturer Sefar®, OKALUX inserts the metal-coated synthetic mesh VISION into the window’s cavity. The amazing result of this incorporation is glass with a textile structure creating animated light reflextions. The special optical effects of OKATECH VISION open up new creative potential with multifaceted application options – from doors to partitions, to façades made entirely out of glass. The special feature of OKATECH VISION is that the mesh is transparent on one side. If the inside remains black, it is translucent and the view from the inside outwards is clear. By contrast, the metal-coated exterior reflects the light and provides an effective screen.

Depending on the size and type of the mesh, and on the metal coating, the light transmission and the energy outlet changes. This means a tighter mesh will reduce the light and heat input.

Metals such as aluminium, copper, chromium or titanium as well as three-dimensional effects, created by the crinkled and double-layered mesh, create an interesting and decorative visual display of light.
