Grimshaw Architects were searching for a suitable facade material that would provide a natural timber aesthetic whilst having low maintenance and high performing values.
Okawood timer grid by Okalux was the perfect solution as it met and exceeded all criteria.
For this particular project ‘Green Star’ rating was essential so not only did we need to use Low E high performing coated glass but we also had to incorporate an FSC (Forrest Stewards Council) approved timber to achieve these ratings.
Another challenge on this particular project was the curved corners of the façade as this was the first time Okalux had produced curved Okawood panels.
Working closely with Okalux and Grimshaw Architects we were able to develop an entirely new product for the PDI project.

The Doherty Institute is home to more than 700 researchers, clinicians, students, and staff. Located in the heart of Melbourne’s Parkville Precinct, the Doherty brings together six major and complementary organisational groups to create a world-class biomedical facility specialising in human infectious diseases and immunity. Melbourne-based Nobel Laureate Peter Doherty is the patron of the project that will consolidate and enhance the leadership of Victorian biomedical expertise.
Grimshaw’s state-of-the-art facility will boast research, reference, and diagnostic services. It also incorporates a range of complex and highly-specialised prime containment laboratories, support spaces, and integrated teaching facilities. With sustainability central to the building’s design, the Doherty has achieved a Green Building Council of Australia 5 Star Green Star – Education Design v1 accreditation.
The Doherty Institute is an unincorporated joint venture partnership between the University of Melbourne and Melbourne Health. The Doherty Institute partners and their affiliates gratefully acknowledge the significant funding assistance provided by the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund and the Victorian Government.
This project was designed in collaboration with Billard Leece Partnership.
